Speakers- Elly Spillekom - Early Wooden Boat Building in Western Australia
Talk on- Our August General Meeting Speaker is Ron Banks, At Rockingham Museum General meeting, Elly Spillekom, secretary and curator of the MHA WA and former co-ordinator of the Duyfken Replica Foundation, will be coming to talk to us about the importance of wooden boat building in the early years of WA, with a particular focus on the industry around Fremantle and Perth .She will talk about the early 100 years but also will talk about the two replica sailing ships built in Fremantle: the HMB Endeavour Replica and the Duyfken Replica and will also talk about the MV Perth ferry restoration – 112 years old, built at Brown's shipyard in Fremantle
The talk shows images and drawings reflecting examples of earlier wooden boat building, to the present day occurring around the Swan River Colony from 1829
We should cherish the history of building wooden boats and honour the wonderful people who still carry on this tradition and craftsmanship.
